Time to unplug, smell the sea air and find your inner Mermaid.
We will start our therapeutic tropical retreat by needle felting a beautiful magical mermaid. Students will focus on creating an upper body wire armature skeleton, sculptural needle felting technique, basic human form and facial features. Over the week students will revisit their mermaid, with demos on creating more detailed facial features and hands. Students will learn wet felting techniques to create smooth fins and fish tails, seaweed and dreadlocks to be combined with colorful curly wool locks for deep sea hair and special techniques for wet felting smooth delicate fingers!

Your mermaid can be embellished with charms, shells and sea glass beads.

As the week progresses and informed by the tropical surroundings, students will expand their felting skills to creating wet felted botanical and sea life forms, using fast felting short fiber merino, aromatheraputic soap and water. Students can create either a stemmed tropical flower or one to wear in their hair or made into a pin.

Students will have the option of spending an afternoon on the torch creating lampworked “sea glass” pieces: transparent big holed beads, hollows, rings, headpins that we will etch and use in our final project. Students can also bring beads and some pieces will be available from the instructor. We will spend a day combining fast felting merino wool with beads, rocks, shells and sea glass to create a beautiful tangle of colorful felted seaweed encasing the beads, that can be worn as a Mermaid necklace and/or displayed as a wall hanging. Each demo with further inform students of all the possibilities with felting and mixed media creations.  Students will have the freedom to focus on any one project or just make samples and experiment.  #1 is fun!

Glass and wool fleece mix beautifully and the color combinations are unrestricted and the possibilities are endless!  I cannot over stress the therapeutic qualities of felting. Students will leave with a variety of techniques in their heads and some finished pieces to inspire them to continue this wonderful, colorful therapeutic art form!
